Klunkerkranich is Berlin’s very own garden of Eden rising skywards from the heart of Neuköln, and has become one of the real gems on the nightlife scene of this newly thriving area.
The rooftop bar can be found on top of the multi-storey car park of Neuköln Arcaden, a dead ordinary shopping centre on Karl-Marx-Strasse in the centre of Neuköln. Take the lift to the top floor and then go up the slope onto the roof to discover this open-air rooftop paradise.
Surprisingly spacious for a rooftop bar, the large garden area decked with wooden benches and quirky seating offers breath-taking vistas towards the centre of the city. The overwhelming feeling is one of freedom, as everything is so open and exposed.
If you manage to tear yourself away from the incredible views over Berlin, the bar itself is a cosy little cabin filled with quirky, mismatched furniture, and funky, festival-style decorations. Drinks are reasonably priced to boot.
Sunset is the time you want to swing by, so you can watch the sun go down over the endless sprawl of orange rooftops and the stunning Berlin skyline. It’s also open during the day though if you want to grab a bite – they serve breakfast from 10 in the morning, and the imaginative lighting also gives it a carnival feel at night.
Klunkerkranich is not just any old rooftop bar – a cultural roof garden offering live music and DJs every day, a weekly film screening, as well as regular workshops and cultural events.
The story of the bar has even been documented by filmmaker Benjamin Riehm in 2015 – DU MUSST DEIN ÄNDERN LEBEN (Live your Changes)
There may be numerous rooftop bars occupying Berlin’s skies, but Klunkerkranich must be the most interesting – a genuine rooftop oasis that rises above the concrete jungle.
The summer timetable lasts for the rest of September, so get down there while the weather is still nice.
