Opened just a year ago is Berlin’s quirkiest beer garden, Birgit und Bier. Situated where the Landwehr Canal meets the river Spree in Kreuzberg, this is a true celebration of all things unusual, with funky furniture, and retro arcade games.
Birgit und Bier is a magical beer garden by day and trendy club by night boasting three small rooms with a variety of music. Of course there is the traditional techno on offer, but also a real mishmash elsewhere.
On arrival you explore this enchanting space like a child with their eyes wide. From a carousel of benches that can be pushed round, to an eccentric Bratwurst vendor with a tremendous sauce selection. Every wall is plastered with colourful art, and the multi-coloured lamps dotted around make it even more of a visual treat.
Cheap but lovely Pilsner Urquell is served in old fashioned mugs, and before delving into the dark, cramped music rooms, you can chill on an array of bizarre, mismatched furniture, from enormous armchairs and comfy sofas, to bumper cars.
A quick stop for some drunken pictures at the Photoautomat that you see littered around the city is also a must.
It feels like you’ve walked into a secluded area of quirky festival like Besitval, but also has the feel of Motion in Bristol. Birigit und Bier have managed to merge the quirky Berlin bar and traditional German beer garden and created a real playground for adults.
Birgit und Bier, Schleusenufer 3, 10997 Berlin, Germany.
Open daily from 2pm, with paid entry from 11pm and open until very late indeed.
